The CLH Group joins the “One Million for the Climate” campaign

  • The company has also calculated and verified the carbon footprint left by its activities for the fourth year in a row.

The CLH Group has joined the “One million for the climate” (1 millón por el clima) campaign promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, which aims to engage companies, public authorities, social entities, citizens and the media in fighting against climate change.

With its endorsement, CLH commits to continuing several ongoing initiatives included in its CSR Master Plan, such as the adaptation of its pipeline network to biofuels, the reduction and segregation of waste or the verification of sustainability and integration into the areas surrounding its pipelines.

In addition, the company has performed the periodic calculation of its carbon footprint for 2014, which has been included in an annual report verified by KPMG that reflects the total quantity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, taking into account factors that help offset part of the emissions, such as planting trees and recycling paper.

This study calculates the carbon footprint for the three scopes defined in the UNE 14064 standard: scope 1, for direct GHG emissions; scope 2, for indirect GHG emissions produced by energy consumed; and scope 3, other emissions resulting from the company's activities but which do not originate in CLH nor do they fall under its ownership.

According to this report, total CO2 emissions by the CLH Group amounted to 86,491 tonnes, of which 54% are related to the power consumption needed for transporting fuels through the pipeline network (scope 2). It should be noted that the use of this network prevents the release of 360,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year, which would be the equivalent emissions if the fuel were transported using other means.

The information contained in this report will be the basis for the company to promote new actions that allow for greater sustainability in the future, as part of the commitment made under the campaign of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

The goal of the “One Million for the Climate” campaign is to gather the highest number of endorsements against climate change and the results will be Spain’s contribution to the World Climate Summit 2015, which the UN will hold at the end of the year in Paris. The Summit will be attended by 200 countries and the approval of a new international climate agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol is expected.
